Universities oppose class certification in US financial aid price-fixing case
( August 19, 2025, 16:22 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Five universities opposed a proposed plaintiff class of students' motion for class certification for their US price-fixing claims over financial aid, telling a federal judge that recent testimony from plaintiff attorney Peter Bach-y-Rita concerning fraud allegedly perpetrated by three firms representing the class show they can't adequately represent the class in accordance with their fiduciary duties. "The evidence adduced in recent weeks confirms that far from being a case about vindicating the rights of financial aid recipients — who received billions of dollars in aid during the alleged class period — this is a case by lawyers, for lawyers," the universities said in the supplemental brief opposing class certification filed to the US Northern District of Illinois.See attached document:...
