Open Markets says US Supreme Court 'grossly usurped' Congress in Slaughter case

( June 29, 2026, 17:15 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The Open Markets Institute said the US Supreme Court has "grossly usurped Congress' constitutional authority" by ruling the president could remove Federal Trade Commission commissioners at will, including former Commissioner Rebecca Slaughter. In doing so, the court "has taken America's gravest constitutional crisis since the Great Depression and made it vastly worse," Open Markets executive director Barry Lynn said in a statement. The high court's majority has put the onus on Congress to preserve its authorities, and the legislature should move immediately to reject the "extremely dangerous" decision and reassert its role, including by carrying out an "entire restructure" of the Supreme Court if need be, Lynn said.Statement follows below:...
