UK govt should remove powers over banking access in new bill, lawmakers say

( June 19, 2026, 13:09 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The UK government should remove plans to give it broad powers over peoples' access to banking services in its new financial services bill, a committee of lawmakers from the unelected upper chamber of parliament has said. In a document setting out its views on various bills, the House of Lords Delegated Powers and Regulatory Reform Committee said the clause in the Financial Services and Markets Bill would allow the government to make regulations and rewrite the law governing customers’ access to high street banking services.
