Banca Carige shareholders lose European Central Bank damages appeal

( May 21, 2026, 09:19 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Italian businessman Vittorio Malacalza and Malacalza Investimenti — who held shares in Banca Carige — may not obtain damages from the European Central Bank over supervisory measures imposed during the financial crisis, the EU Court of Justice has ruled in an appeal against a judgment by a lower EU court. Judges said the lower court was wrong to find that relevant ECB banking supervision rules did not confer rights on shareholders, but still concluded that the ECB had committed no sufficiently serious breaches that could trigger liability.Judgment attached (in French).
