South Korea promulgates law for new serious crimes office, starts October launch process

( March 24, 2026, 05:56 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea’s cabinet on Tuesday promulgated the law establishing the Serious Crimes Investigation Office, setting in motion the next phase of the government’s plan to fully separate investigation and prosecution functions. The Ministry of the Interior and Safety said it will now prepare for the office's October launch by drafting lower-level rules, including investigation protocols and the office’s organizational structure, for a body that will investigate major crimes such as large-scale corruption and fraud, stock manipulation and unfair trade practices, industrial technology leaks, drug trafficking and cyberattacks on critical national infrastructure. The government also said it will build the criminal justice system, secure office space and budget and put in place oversight mechanisms including a review committee to examine the propriety and legality of investigations. The law establishing the Public Prosecution Office was also promulgated on Tuesday.Statement is attached (in Korean)....
