Indonesia financial watchdog issues rules enabling consumer-protection lawsuits

( January 20, 2026, 07:15 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Indonesia’s Financial Services Authority, known as OJK, which oversees the financial services sector, has issued a regulation setting out procedures for filing consumer-protection lawsuits under its existing statutory powers. The watchdog said Tuesday that the regulation is intended to “strengthen the OJK’s role in protecting consumers and the public and building trust in the financial services sector.” The rules allow OJK to bring lawsuits, based on institutional legal standing, against licensed or formerly licensed financial services firms as well as other parties acting in bad faith, without charging consumers fees until court decisions are implemented. The regulation, which took effect on Dec. 22, 2025, governs among other things the authority, purpose and implementation of consumer-protection lawsuits, the enforcement of court decisions and reporting on their implementation.The statement follows (in Indonesian)....
