Rules for lenders to protect homeowners not needed, UK financial watchdog stresses

( November 11, 2025, 13:40 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The UK Mortgage Charter, which includes standards for lenders to help mortgage borrowers at times of higher interest rates, should be retired, the head of the Financial Conduct Authority reiterated on Tuesday. The charter was introduced by the Conservative government that lost power in July last year. In a speech, Nikhil Rathi said removing it "would not impede consumer protection — but would remove overlapping standards and reporting requirements." The FCA has previously said repossessions have been declining and firms could benefit from deleting the duplicative requirements as the current Labour government seeks to boost economic growth. It has also said the Consumer Duty would ensure consumer protection instead.Speech is attached....
