South Korean regulator to study classification, oversight of virtual-asset groups

( November 7, 2025, 08:29 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea’s antitrust watchdog is commissioning a study on how to regulate business groups built around virtual assets, aiming to clarify how the Monopoly Regulation and Fair Trade Act should apply to crypto conglomerates. The Korea Fair Trade Commission said the move follows recent “large business group” designations — Dunamu in 2022 and, in 2025, both Dunamu and Bithumb — and the sector’s shift into the financial regulatory fold under the Virtual-Asset User Protection Act and a planned digital-asset basic law. The study will map industry structure, transaction flows and governance, compare domestic and overseas regulatory approaches and assess competition-law obligations and issues for crypto-centered groups, culminating in policy recommendations. The study is slated to run from November 2025 through June 2026.The notice, in Korean, is attached....
