UK domestic premises suppliers get key exemption in BNPL rules

( June 16, 2025, 13:30 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The UK government is set to exempt companies designated as “domestic premises suppliers” from seeking credit-broking permissions to offer Buy Now, Pay Later products. The finance ministry had initially laid down BNPL legislation — expected to be effective by mid-2026 — without such exemption. In a statement released today, the ministry said that its approach was "disproportionate" and the amendment would be introduced through a negative statutory instrument. Following engagement with the industry and regulators, the government found that domestic premises suppliers offering BNPL present a low risk to consumers, and that without the exemption, many small businesses would decide not to offer BNPL given the costs of seeking credit-broking permissions, thus reducing options for consumers.Statement is attached....
