US SEC to review its limitations on private investment fund access

( May 19, 2025, 20:13 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The US Securities and Exchange Commission will review its rules providing that closed-end funds investing 15 percent or more of their assets in private funds should impose a minimum initial investment requirement of $25,000 and restrict sales to investors that satisfy the accredited investor standard, Chair Paul Atkins said. "As a result, many retail investors have missed out on opportunities to invest in closed-end funds that invest in private investment funds, like hedge funds and private equity funds," he said. In addition, the SEC will undertake a comprehensive review of its enforcement tool, the Consolidated Audit Trail, which "has quite an appetite for data and computer power," with costs rising to nearly $250 million a year, he said.
