Mediobanca's hope to fend off takeover bid from MPS relies on the EU's ECB

However, the deal is unlikely to raise competition concerns due to the fragmented nature of the national banking market, nor draw opposition by the Italian government, which actively supports consolidation. Mediobanca's best hope may rest then with the European Central Bank which, as its supervisor, is set to decide on the deal by June on grounds related to financial stability.In the rapidly evolving landscape of Italian banking consolidation, one potential deal is progressing swiftly....
