Work with politically exposed person doesn't make you close associate, EU court says

( June 19, 2025, 08:54 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Someone working in the same executive body as a politically exposed person, or PEP, cannot be automatically considered a close associate under EU rules on money laundering and terrorism financing, though it should be taken into account in any assessment, the EU's top court said today. A PEP is someone with a prominent public function and is considered higher risk due to the potential for corruption or money laundering. The question was put forward by a Latvian court that wanted to know if someone could be considered a close associate of a PEP just because they both work in the same body, or if other factors must also be considered.Judgment attached. Case reference is C-509/23. ...
