Japan's financial sector urged to prepare for AI-powered cyberattacks

( May 22, 2026, 05:17 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Japanese financial regulators on Friday urged financial institutions to prepare for cyberattacks powered by frontier artificial intelligence, amid growing concerns that advanced AI tools such as Anthropic’s Claude Mythos could be exploited by attackers. Citing the possibility that numerous vulnerabilities could be discovered simultaneously and require large-scale patching efforts, the Financial Services Agency and a Bank of Japan official called on financial institutions to take proactive measures. Those include prioritizing critical systems and services for protection, allocating additional personnel to apply patches, and preparing for potential IT system shutdowns.“Top management leaders should consider autonomously suspending services or IT systems as an option” if cyber defense becomes unmanageable, the regulators said in their request.The statement is attached (in Japanese)....
