UK moves to update rules to help SMEs obtain finance after bank rejection

( October 27, 2025, 10:07 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The UK finance ministry is seeking views on updating its Bank Referral Scheme, an initiative from 2014 that requires major lenders, whenever they reject an SME's application for finance, to refer that business to finance platforms that can match it to an alternative finance provider. The ministry is considering amending the legislation to capture building societies and non-bank lenders that are — or may become in future — important providers of SME finance.
