BOE to monitor cash acceptance following concerns from UK lawmakers

( July 12, 2025, 00:02 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The UK government has confirmed that the Bank of England will monitor the acceptance of cash, following a report from the parliamentary Treasury committee. The committee had voiced concerns that declining acceptance of cash could lead to a “two-tier society,” with the most vulnerable bearing the cost. Lawmakers had said that non-acceptance of cash affects vulnerable groups, including the elderly, people with learning disabilities, and domestic-abuse victims. “The commitment from the Bank of England to continue monitoring cash acceptance is a positive first step,” committee chair Meg Hillier said in a statement, adding that the government should go even further to protect vulnerable consumers.Statement follows....
