EU host insurance supervisors can sanction foreign companies, court opinion says

( June 5, 2025, 11:07 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Certain rules on insurance companies not complying with legal provisions can apply to a host country supervisor's authority over insurance companies in other EU member states, a legal opinion for the EU top court suggested today. Advocate General Maciej Szpunar, in his non-binding opinion, said that host country supervisors can directly impose sanctions on foreign insurance companies for violations of certain EU rules occurring within their territory, without necessarily requiring prior coordination with the home member state's supervisory authority.Opinion attached (in French). Case reference is C-18/24....
