UK 'buy now, pay later' regulation to be in place by mid-2026, government says

By Phoebe Seers ( May 19, 2025, 11:46 GMT | Insight) -- "Buy now, pay later" providers such as PayPal and Klarna should be regulated by mid-next year, the UK government said today as it introduced legislation into Parliament. It has not yet decided exactly which types of services should be affected by the rules. Retailers that offer BNPL services will be exempted, despite concerns that the likes of Amazon could take advantage of an uneven playing field. But questions remain over plumbers and other domestic premises suppliers. "Buy now, pay later" credit providers should see regulation in the UK bite in the middle of next year, the government said today, although retailers that offer their own products will be exempted from the rules....
