Thailand to elevate anti-scam center into full department

( April 25, 2025, 05:37 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, or MDES, plans to upgrade its Anti-Online Scam Operation Center into a full department to strengthen its authority and accountability in tackling online scams. The move aligns with the emergency decree on the Prevention and Suppression of Technology Crimes, which took effect on April 13. The decree mandates stricter measures against cyber fraud, including tighter controls on bank-account openings and expanded responsibility for financial institutions and telecom operators. Minister Prasert Jantararuangtong noted that the center’s expanded role includes rapid-response operations, victim-compensation support, and coordination with agencies such as the Bank of Thailand and the Anti-Money Laundering Office.
