Netherlands concerned about EU's ETS extension; calls for all-vehicle emission standards

( November 25, 2019, 16:06 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The incoming European Commission’s plans to extend the bloc’s emissions-trading system to the transport and building sectors haven't been welcomed by the Netherlands. “We have concerns about the proposed extension of the ETS system to road transport and the built environment,” the country said today in a policy paper regarding President-elect Ursula von der Leyen’s climate plans, known as the "European green deal." Among other issues, the Dutch government asks the incoming EU executive for “more stringent standards” for greenhouse-gas emissions for all vehicles as well as “concrete measures” to curb international shipping’s environmental footprint. It also called for an adjustment of EU state aid rules to enable national governments to back companies using new technologies such as carbon capture and storage.Statement follows.
