EU emissions declining, but 2030 targets need ‘significant acceleration,’ commission reports say

( October 31, 2019, 15:25 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: EU greenhouse-gas emissions decreased by 2 percent in 2018, reaching their lowest level since 1990, especially thanks to cuts achieved in the sectors covered by the bloc’s Emissions Trading System, the European Commission said in a series of reports out today. However, EU-wide 2030 targets for energy efficiency, renewables and emissions reduction will require many member states to adopt “additional measures” for non-ETS sectors, the commission said. Referring to 2018, the reports find that while emissions from installations covered by the ETS were reduced by 4.1 percent compared to 2017, emissions from transport, buildings, agriculture and waste — which aren’t included within the bloc’s cap-and-trade system — dropped by only 0.9 percent.Statement follows.
