Boost appliances’ repairability to curb carbon emissions, EU environmental group says

( September 18, 2019, 11:59 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: A report published today by the European Environmental Bureau finds that extending the lifetime of products such as notebook computers, washing machines, vacuum cleaners — and especially smartphones — may significantly boost the EU’s emissions-cutting efforts. Expanding the lifespan of the EU’s stock of these products by five years would save almost 10 million tons of carbon-dioxide emissions annually by 2030, the study says. The EEB also said that EU regulators should turn their attention to the emissions embedded in the production of electrical appliances, and not only on the energy used to power them. “Extending the lifespans of smartphones and laptops by increasing repairability must be a priority as emissions linked to manufacturing are the most important for these products,” the EEB said.Statement follows.
