​Australia wants to give corporate watchdog access to intercepted telecommunications information

( July 21, 2017, 03:47 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The Australian government is seeking comments on a proposal to boost the enforcement powers of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission by enhancing its access to information obtained from telecommunications interception warrants. Under existing laws, even when an interception agency uncovers material relating to serious breaches of the Corporations Act, such as market manipulation and financial services fraud, it cannot share this evidence with the ASIC, thus limiting the corporate watchdog's ability to conduct cooperative investigations with other interception agencies, such as the Australian Federal Police. The minister's statement follows and the consultation paper is attached. ...
