US Fed’s authorization of bank dividend payouts creates `significant risk’ firms will need to curb credit, Fed’s Brainard says

( June 25, 2020, 21:43 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The US Federal Reserve’s authorization of bank dividend payouts for the third quarter will create a “significant risk” that the firms will have to raise capital or limit credit while the economy is plummeting due to the pandemic, said Fed Governor Lael Brainard, the sole Democrat on the board. The dividend amount to be permitted will be based on banks’ average net income over the previous four quarters. “Using backward-looking earnings as the basis for payouts in a forward-looking capital framework is problematic at a time when future earnings are likely to decline and required buffers are likely to rise,” she said.Statement follows in full. ...
