India opens door to foreign lawyers under reciprocity rules

( May 15, 2025, 00:09 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The Bar Council of India has amended its 2022 Rules to allow foreign lawyers and law firms to practice foreign law in India on a reciprocity basis. Under the revised rules notified on May 13, foreign legal professionals can register with the BCI. However, their practice is restricted to advising on foreign law, handling international legal matters and engaging in non-litigious activities such as arbitration and contract negotiation, according to the rules issued. They remain prohibited from appearing before Indian courts or practicing Indian law. The amendments also outline conditions for registration, requiring foreign lawyers to be licensed in their home jurisdictions and ensuring reciprocal rights for Indian lawyers abroad. These reforms aim to enhance India’s international legal standing while safeguarding domestic legal practitioners' exclusive rights over Indian law matters.
