Brazil opposes new 12.5 percent forced-labor tariff imposed by US

( July 23, 2026, 22:12 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The Brazilian government sharply criticized the new additional tariff imposed by the US following an investigation into imports of goods allegedly produced with forced labor. In a statement, Brazil said the US lacked an "internal legal basis to sustain its protectionist trade policy," adding that the South American country is globally recognized for its efforts to combat forced labor. It also said it will invoke the reciprocity mechanism provided for under Brazilian law, while seeking to discuss the controversy within the World Trade Organization.
