China opposes British Steel nationalization, vows strong measures
( July 17, 2026, 02:16 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: China’s Ministry of Commerce said Friday that it expressed strong opposition to the UK government’s decision to nationalize British Steel and would take strong measures to protect the interests of Chinese companies. The ministry said the UK had unfairly taken control of Chinese Jingye Group’s British Steel business in the name of national security, despite the company’s significant investment to keep the loss-making steelmaker operating and preserve jobs. It urged the UK to comply with international rules and its obligations under the China-UK investment-protection agreement, treat Chinese companies fairly and protect their lawful rights. The ministry said it would support Jingye in pursuing legal remedies and closely monitor developments.Statement follows (in Chinese). ...
