China GDP growth hits 5% in first quarter of 2026

( April 16, 2026, 03:49 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: China’s gross domestic product grew 5 percent year on year in the first quarter to 33.4 trillion yuan ($4.89 trillion), National Bureau of Statistics Deputy Head Mao Shengyong said at a Thursday press conference. Primary industry output rose 3.8 percent, secondary industry increased 4.9 percent and services expanded 5.2 percent. On a quarterly basis, gross domestic product grew 1.3 percent. The producer price index decreased 0.6 percent year on year in the quarter, while it increased 0.5 percent in March, reversing a 0.9 percent decline in February and ending a 41-month contraction.Excerpt of the briefing follows (in Chinese)....
