China exports fall in March as imports surge, Q1 trade hits record high

( April 15, 2026, 04:02 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: China’s exports fell 6.6 percent year-on-year in March to 1.38 trillion yuan ($203 billion), while imports rose 13.2 percent to 1.01 trillion yuan, General Administration of Customs Vice Minister Wang Jun said at a press briefing Tuesday. Despite the decline in exports, China’s total goods trade reached 11.84 trillion yuan in the first quarter, a record high for the period and up 15 percent from a year earlier. Exports rose 11.9 percent to 6.85 trillion yuan, while imports climbed 19.6 percent to 4.99 trillion yuan. Mechanical and electrical products accounted for 63.4 percent of exports, with strong gains in electric vehicles, lithium batteries and wind turbines.
