EU's Von der Leyen, Australian prime minister conclude talks on trade deal

( March 24, 2026, 00:47 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen have concluded negotiations on the Australia–European Union Free Trade Agreement in Canberra and will now move to complete their respective domestic approval processes for the agreement to be signed and enter into force. In a joint statement on Tuesday, Albanese and Von der Leyen said the agreement will “strengthen bilateral trade and investment, support economic growth and reinforce the shared commitment of Australia and the European Union to open and rules-based trade.” The statement added that Albanese and Von der Leyen also welcomed the conclusion of the Australia-European Union Security and Defense Partnership. The signing of the trade deal on Tuesday marks the conclusion of long-running negotiations between the two regions that began in 2018.Joint statements are attached....
