US House's China committee says Chinese illegal fishing practices global in scope

( January 15, 2026, 22:07 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The US House Select Committee on China released a new report detailing Chinese efforts to monopolize fishing worldwide and to engage in what lawmakers described as systematic illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing. The committee said China operates the world's largest distant-water fishing fleet of more than 16,000 ships, which it uses to dominate the seafood supply chain. China uses forced labor, the committee added, also pointing to Chinese manipulation of seafood markets and the domination of seafood processing.Full statement follows. See attached report....
