India imposes graded safeguard duty on steel imports to shield domestic producers

( December 31, 2025, 06:44 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: In a move to protect India's domestic steel industry from a "recent, sudden and sharp" surge in foreign shipments, the government has imposed a graded safeguard duty on various non-alloy and alloy steel flat products. The long-term protective framework will span three years. To give the domestic industry time to adjust while maintaining market competitiveness, the duty is designed to taper off annually. For the first year ending in April 2026, a 12 percent ad valorem duty will apply. The rate will then fall to 11.5 percent in the second year and to 11 percent in the final year ending in April 2028.The notice is attached. ...
