EU foreign-subsidy rules need full 'reworking,' says Germany

By Lewis Crofts ( December 22, 2025, 05:00 GMT | Insight) -- The EU's new law to police companies distorting European markets due to financial support from foreign governments needs a "fundamental revision" to "reduce bureaucracy" and ensure the bloc can still attract investment, the German government said. Seeking changes to the Foreign Subsidies Regulation, Berlin said the law should focus on specific strategic sectors exposed to subsidy policies, and move away from an obligation to notify investments to a mechanism where officials "call in" suspicious deals.
