South Korea to codify safeguards for US investments after tariff talks

( December 12, 2025, 06:50 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea plans to establish a legal basis for investment commitments made during tariff negotiations with the US. As part of its 2026 policy agenda released on Thursday, the Ministry of Economy and Finance said the government will introduce a special act to manage South Korea-US strategic investments and create a multilayered decision-making structure to assess the commercial viability of proposed projects and their impact on the economy and foreign-exchange markets. The planned act will also codify safeguards outlined in the memorandum of understanding and the fact sheet with the US, such as the annual investment limits of up to $20 billion, the ability to request adjustments in the event of foreign-exchange market instability and requirements to ensure commercial rationality.The policy agenda is attached (in Korean)....
