EU steel industry to be protected with cut in import quotas, higher tariffs (update*)

By Jackson Cooper ( October 7, 2025, 15:26 GMT | Insight) -- The EU steel industry stands to gain stability from a European Commission proposal to address unfair practices relating to global overcapacity that would almost halve import quotas and would increase tariffs to protect domestic production. Under the plan presented Tuesday, import quotas would be cut by 47 percent to 18.3 million metric tons, with a 50 percent tariff applied to volumes exceeding the quota.
