Lower EU steel import quotas and hiked tariffs proposed to tackle overcapacity

( October 7, 2025, 15:26 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The EU steel sector would see tariff-free import volumes limited to 18.3 million tons a year — as well as an out-of-quota duty doubled to 50 percent — under a proposal unveiled on Tuesday to protect the industry. “Global overcapacity is damaging our industry,” said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, calling on EU member states and the European Parliament to move ahead quickly in negotiating and approving the proposal.
