Malaysia trade minister defends halal standards in global trade reset call

( September 19, 2025, 07:59 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Malaysia has defended its halal certification standards as a “red line” in trade negotiations, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz said in a speech on Friday. He said US negotiators raised halal certification as a potential non-tariff barrier in recent tariff talks with the US, but Malaysia resisted, agreeing only to limited facilitation for imports. The minister said the $3.5 trillion halal industry — projected to reach $5 trillion by 2030 — can resist rising protectionism by strengthening multilateral cooperation. This, he said, includes reforming global trade bodies such as the World Trade Organization to update rules on digital trade and sustainability.The speech is attached....
