EU clings to pre-letter tariff terms as basis for further talks with US

By Joanna Sopinska and Jean Comte ( July 15, 2025, 15:29 GMT | Insight) -- The EU is striving to avert the 30 percent universal tariff on its exports threatened by US President Trump, aiming instead to base further negotiations on a limited, unwritten tariff arrangement discussed prior to Trump’s surprise letter on Saturday. The European Commission is preparing retaliatory measures targeting up to 94 billion euros in US goods and export restrictions but has extended the suspension of initial countermeasures until Aug. 6 to allow for further talks.The EU is still hoping to reach a deal with the US to avoid a 30 percent universal tariff threatened by US President Donald Trump on Saturday. However, the basis for further negotiations with the US is a limited and unwritten tariff arrangement that the two sides were discussing before the weekend, MLex has learned....
