Malaysia requires permit for export, transshipment, transit of US-made AI chips

( July 14, 2025, 03:49 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Malaysia now requires a strategic trade permit for all exports, transshipments and transit of high-performance AI chips of US origin, the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry announced today. The measure takes immediate effect and draws on Section 12 of the Strategic Trade Act 2010 — a catch-all control provision that compels individuals or companies to notify authorities at least 30 days in advance if they suspect the items may be misused or used for restricted activities. The ministry said the move aims to close regulatory gaps while it reviews whether to list the chips under Malaysia’s Strategic Items List.The statement is attached....
