Lack of harmonized customs penalties risks enforcement gaps, EU Commission warns

Customs chief Matthias Petschke said the move by EU countries to drop harmonized rules could lead to “customs shopping” and could weaken enforcement. Talks on the reform package have also exposed tensions over the governance of the proposed EU Customs Agency, with national governments seeking to curb the commission’s influence.Not including a minimum set of common penalties and definitions for customs infringements in the EU’s upcoming reform will risk undermining the bloc’s Customs Union, a top European Commission official has warned....
