Google's high-precision map request prompts research project in South Korea

( June 10, 2025, 07:55 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The South Korean government has launched a research project in response to Google’s request to obtain the country's high-precision national base map. The National Geographic Information Institute, an affiliate of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, is commissioning a study to explore how to handle requests from Google and other foreign tech companies for detailed domestic map data. The study will examine the geopolitical implications of transferring base maps abroad amid shifting geopolitical dynamics and rising trade protectionism since the Trump administration. It will also explore strategies for responding to Google’s request and consider long-term measures for future map requests from foreign companies.
