EU’s carbon border tax revamp to exempt small importers, delay payments to 2027

By Oscar Pandiello ( February 24, 2025, 17:17 GMT | Insight) -- The EU plans to ease Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism compliance by introducing an exemption for annual imports under 50 tons — or with less than 100 tons of embedded CO2 emissions — and postponing the first certificate purchases to 2027. According to a draft proposal seen by MLex, the European Commission aims to cut red tape while maintaining coverage of over 99 percent of embedded emissions. Once presented, it will still require approval from EU lawmakers and member states.EU importers of carbon-intensive goods will see new compliance rules under the upcoming Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism simplification proposal, including an exemption for annual imports under 50 tons and a delayed start for payments....
