Optus contravened privacy laws in phone-directory breach, Australian regulator says

( June 11, 2026, 01:49 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Australian mobile-network operator Singtel Optus failed to take reasonable steps to protect customers’ personal information from unauthorized disclosure in the White Pages directory, the privacy regulator said. In a statement on Thursday, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner said between Oct. 1, 2015 and Sept. 27, 2019, Optus interfered with the privacy of individuals whose personal information was listed in the White Pages contrary to an expressed preference or request for an unlisted number. The regulator said it will consider "reasonable and proportionate compensation" for affected customers in any determination relating to the representative complaint on the same conduct in “due course.” The determination issued on Thursday follows the regulator's investigation launched in 2021.Statement follows.
