New online safety and free speech recommendation gets Council of Europe’s approval

( April 8, 2026, 14:31 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Online safety and free speech are once again the subject of a list of recommendations, approved by the Council of Europe on Wednesday. In Strasbourg the foreign affairs ministers of EU member states endorsed a new rulebook for platforms, inspired by the EU Digital Services Act and the UK Online Safety Act. Among other guidelines, the Council addresses the wide availability of AI, and recommends that platforms with large user bases in a certain region assign experts with an understanding of local safety risks.The statement from the Council of Europe — “Recommendation CM/Rec(2026)4 of the Committee of Ministers to member states on online safety and empowerment of users and content creators” — is attached....
