Malaysia enacts Online Safety Act to bolster protections for children and families

( January 1, 2026, 08:57 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Malaysia’s Online Safety Act 2025, or ONSA, came into force on Thursday, Jan. 1, introducing a legal framework to enhance online protections, especially for children and families, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission said. Under the law, licensed application service providers must implement risk-based safety measures, safeguard priority harmful content such as child sexual abuse material and financial fraud, and facilitate user reporting and assistance. The law also brings qualifying social media platforms under Malaysia’s licensing regime. The commission said the law aims to strengthen oversight of digital services, promote safer online interactions and build public trust in the country’s rapidly evolving online ecosystem.Statement follows....
