Italy unlawfully derailed digital TV licensing process, Strasbourg judges say

( November 27, 2025, 12:55 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Italy violated broadcasters’ free expression rights when it suspended and later annulled a digital television frequency tender, according to a press release Thursday from the European Court of Human Rights. The Strasbourg judges found that ministers and lawmakers had overridden the decisions of AGCOM, the communications regulatory authority, leaving applicants without the necessary legal safeguards to prevent arbitrary state interference. Once the judgment becomes final, which will happen if no party seeks grand chamber review within three months or if such a request is refused, it will be binding on Italy.The press release is attached....
