Australia releases age-assurance trial findings as social media ban looms

( September 1, 2025, 13:26 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Age checks to be implemented in Australia ahead of a social media ban for under-16s are technically feasible and broadly robust, but no single solution is effective across all contexts, Australia’s Age Assurance Technology Trial has concluded. The 10-volume report, published yesterday, analyzed techniques such as age verification, age estimation and age inference, as well as parental control mechanisms. It flagged risks from unnecessary data retention and revealed interoperability challenges. The trial was led by the Age Check Certification Scheme, a UK-based certification body, and was funded by the Australian government with input from both the privacy and the online safety regulators.Statement follows.
