Platforms told to introduce age checks in UK as enforcement powers start today

By Patricia Figueiredo ( July 25, 2025, 09:23 GMT | Insight) -- Online platforms must enforce age checks from today to comply with the UK’s Online Safety Act, regulator Ofcom said as it gains powers to enforce its children's protection codes. More than 1,000 services have confirmed they will implement age assurance measures, which must be considered “highly effective” by the watchdog. Ofcom warned it would begin checking compliance immediately, with companies risking investigations or fines of up to 10 percent of global revenue for breaches. Online platforms X, Reddit, Discord, Grindr and Bluesky were the latest to commit to introducing age checks to prevent children from accessing harmful content in the UK, regulator Ofcom has announced.
