UK opens consultation on satellite-based communication band

( July 21, 2025, 14:21 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The UK has opened an eight-week consultation on how the 2 GHz Mobile Satellite Services band should be allocated after existing licenses held by Viasat and Echostar expire in 2027. The UK telecoms regulator Ofcom today published a call for input to explore potential use cases for the band, which is being used only for satellite-based communication services. These could include in-flight connectivity, direct-to-device mobile and Internet of Things applications. Ofcom is also seeking feedback on coexistence, competition, license duration and the relationship between UK and EU spectrum policy. The consultation closes on Sept. 19.  Statement follows.
