CCS projects set to reach 430 megatons of CO2 per year by 2030, IEA says

( April 30, 2025, 09:33 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Major carbon capture and storage projects have begun construction or started operations worldwide in 2024, said the International Energy Agency. In 2025, new projects will become operational, although the first quarter showed modest growth. Based on the current pipeline, CCS is expected to reach 430 megatons of CO2 per year by 2030. Most projects are currently linked to natural gas facilities, but the technology could expand into new sectors such as hydrogen, carbon removals, and emerging areas like data centers. Geographic concentration will remain a risk, says the Agency, as 80 percent of projects will be based in North America and Europe by 2030.Full statement follows:...
