Potential TikTok ban scrutinized by US Supreme Court as deadline approaches

By Mike Swift ( January 10, 2025, 23:03 GMT | Insight) -- The US Supreme Court spent more than two and a half hours hearing argument today from TikTok, TikTok creators and the US Solicitor General about whether it should block or delay the Jan. 19 deadline for China's ByteDance to divest its US subsidiary TikTok, with data security aspects of the law seeming to carry more weight with the justices than concerns about content manipulation. TikTok’s lawyer clarified that the law means TikTok “goes dark” on Jan. 19 unless the Supreme Court acts. With TikTok’s lawyer telling the nine justices the social media platform used by half the US population will “go dark” in nine days unless they intervene, the US Supreme Court today faced down an unprecedented First Amendment decision it must make in a scant few days that reflects how data privacy and security issues have increasingly crossed over into national security concerns....
